Dr. Seuss said it best
The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house all that cold, cold wet day…
If it were possible for me to sit in the house today, I’d prefer it. To me a gray day is a morning day – where it seems like wake-up time — no matter the time. I’m a morning person, so this really works for me. I write best in the morning and a full day of morning – well, if I didn’t have to drive to school, do my taxes and shop for Passover food — I would be fabulously productive. I would light a winter-scented candle and hunker down. I’d get a lot done although that might or might not include the treadmill.
A gal can dream, right?
I like to think I can predict when I’ll do the most writing, but the truth is, I can’t. It’s never late at night, I know that much, but the rest is up for grabs. A sunny day might be inspiring as I sit next to a big bay window. Or that might make me want to go outside. A dreary day like today might make me want to stay inside and write – or it might beckon me to rent a movie. Days littered with appointments and have-to’s might the ones where the ideas never stop. Those are the days I’m scribbling on napkins.
I have found one thing to be consistent though — you must open the doc in order to begin.

See, I am a late night writer, but working full-time during the day and having to get up in the morning means I have to make do and write when I can. It’s strange how we come to associate specific times of the day with productivity. Besides the obvious physiological reasons (more awake/alert in the morning etc), it doesn’t make that much sense, really. We are, indeed, creatures of habit.
These are my favorite types of writing days. Maybe that’s my main problem getting motivated — it’s always sunny here. I know it sounds like I’m gloating, but I would love a gray dreary day.
Open the doc? That’s it! That’s it! My problem is it can take about three hours to open the doc on some days, LOL…
Iain, I think sometimes our habits get in the way because we won’t try something new. Although if it ain’t broke, why fix it? I can write in the afternoon too – but like all of us – there are other things that also have to get done!

Melanie,
Yes, please move to a dark dreary place so you can get your writing done. NOT! Although I would like to have you back in Chicago!
Amy
Spy,
I know!!! The words are always so close but yet so far aren’t they? Just one click away…if only our fingers would do it!
Amy
Durn, wish you’d shared that secret a little sooner. *snicker*
