Happy, schmappy
I have a friend who is always happy and upbeat. I’ve known her for a gazillion years, so yes there has been some sadness in her life, but I can’t remember a bad mood or a harsh word or sulking or a negative attitude or pessimism. She never complains, yet she’s not plastic. She’s a great friend – fun, funny and helpful.
And while I adore her, it reminds me of living in Tucson, Arizona. Beautiful but a bit strange. No seasons, no deviations from the norm, always wondering what month it is because it’s just not normal to water flowers in January.
Actually, it bugs the shit outta me.
Obviously because I truly don’t understand it.

And I have a few friends who read this blog who will know it’s NOT them! LOL!
I generally am optimistic, but can’t say I am “sunny” or anything like that. Too sardonic. And I don’t really have any friends like that–people like that scare me.
E
Erica – I’m optimistic as well…this is beyond that. Crazy stuff.
Amy
I’m usually pretty upbeat, but I certainly have my less-sunny moments. I’m just not happy there, so I do my best to get out ASAP. I like being happy. It makes me happy.;-) (Sorry, it’s Monday morning. I’m trying my best…!!!)
clearly, it ain’t me
Repressed anger, sadness, frustration suppresses the immune system and has been implicated in cancers of the colon, stomach and esophagus. Tears release toxins and it’s not normal to function without all our feelings expressed. We have them for a reason.
As for me, I live in reality and that reality contains fear, anger, grief, laughter, need, want, passion, happiness, sadness and hopefully a BIG ASS PUBLISHING CONTRACT FOR US ALL!
Just thought I’d sneak that in. Oh and if I don’t get a big ass publishing deal at some point I’m afraid I might be a bit on the huffy side.
Debbie,
You are funny!
Amy
Fern,
Ehem, um, clearly. And I mean that with love.
Val,
You made me laugh – a good thing! I’ll be there for the huffy side should need be…but I think you’re gonna be just fine!
xoxo

I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone perpetually chipper with no downside is steadily medicated! Everyone has to have a change of seasons, or else you’re a cyborg. LOL!
I try to be positive, but that reality thing someone mentioned keeps grabbing the positive club and beating me with it. So I tend to be more on the fence, jumping off wherever there’s an opening!
Sharla,
I laughed out loud. I’ve wondered if she is steadily medicated but have never asked. I enjoy a range of emotions though I am an optimist.
Reality does have a way of putting a damper on things, doesn’t it?
Amy
I would be suspicious of someone who appeared to be “always happy”. I’m pretty optimistic usually but I do have my bad days and times when those around me know I’m not happy. Like you said, one emotion all the time is like living in the desert – dry.
Amy, you have just summed up why I hate living in Mexico.
I consider myself a happy, upbeat person, but I’m certainly not a daily ray of sunshine. I think you need a balance to appreciate the truly good days.
And the by way, that’s a fricking HUGE smiley face!
LOL, Amy. Perpetual Pollyanna?
I’m here via MindyMom (although your name sounds awfully familiar…). This post was easier for me to comment on than your most recent one. I find these type of people equally annoying! I have one such friend that makes it a point to curse in front of me because she knows how happy it makes me.
HA! Its so funny you mention something like this. Over the weekend I was at a Mary Kay party. We went around the table introducing ourselves and this one woman was all positive and upbeat and said basically everything is great in her life…kids, health, marriage, finances. The woman next to her gave her a look, and said ‘Really? No problems whatsoever?’ Later in the kitchen the other woman and I were laughing because we cannot imagine NOT having a problem. I seriously wanted to bitch slap the woman back into reality. ;o) Instead I put on some lip gloss and smiled at myself in my little mirror, thinking she’s definitely got problems if she thinks everything is great!
