Revelations in revealing

I’m a bit flummoxed today and therefore I’ve been staring at Facebook and not doing much writing. Sometimes I have to take a break, especially after the days I’ve had reordering scenes so much that I’m exhausted — like I’ve rearranged a house full of solid wood furniture myself. All I did was cut and paste! Can you imagine if I had to do it with white-out or worse — retype the entire thing from beginning to end?

So, in an effort to remain literary on a day when I watched soaps and did housework, I took this quiz I found at Spy’s place, and now I know that out of all Jane Austen’s heroine’s, I am most like…

I am Elinor Dashwood!

You are Elinor Dashwood of Sense & Sensibility! You are practical, circumspect, and discreet. Though you are tremendously sensible and allow your head to rule, you have a deep, emotional side that few people often see.

And strangely, I totally agree, although I realize that simply by nature of blogging these characteristics of mine might not be revealed. But darned if those pick-a-circle online quizzes aren’t a modern marvel. I am practical in the sense that I tell-it-like-it-is. I have no time or energy for beating-around-the-bush (although it seems I have ample time for excessive hypen usage). In the past few years I’ve become practical in my purchases, reasoning that if one already has five black T shirts, there is no need for two more. One more is plenty. I am circumspect by nature of being a thinker, therefore I usually pause before I do or say something. Writers benefit most of all by having this characteristic because writing takes time — and works well with being a tad cautious. It also sometimes plays into being suspicious which I can be, sometimes. If being discreet means being selective in what I say to whom, then yes, I am discreet. I’m a fully integrated writer-mom (with a hypen obsession) but I pick and choose what details are disclosed and when, if ever. I am most definitely not an open book. I am sensible because I am circumspect, kind of a waiting room in my brain where things stew. I think of the opposite of sensible as flighty, the inability to make a decision and stick to it and do what ‘makes sense.’ As for the deep, emotional side? I don’t have the luxury or time to often be deep or emotional, but I can be. Depth doesn’t run rampant in the suburbs — so my deep conversations tend to be few and far between — or far away. I also think that deep can be exhausting unless you can be in and out of it quickly — you know — like speed dating of the minds.

So that’s my take on myself as an Elinor Dashwood.

What do you think…and who are YOU?

I think it fits you to a T! You do come across as sensible. It’s funny, though, how things come off differently online. My best friend and I were talking last night and she was laughing because she said, in comparison to how I speak, I am strangely eloquent on my blog. It’s true! I can’t talk.

I’ve had a terrible time writing today. Like writing through mud. Then I opened a new document and wrote a scene I would never write. I don’t know. I think I’m going to end up with something completely unmarketable. Kinda depressing. But somedays, nothing else will write. Icky writing day.

Elinor, really? Cool. I LOVE Elinor! She’s one of my most favorite of all the JA characters! When I took the test this past summer I was positive I would be Emma. LOL! Every answer I gave, I thought to myself, yep, I’m Emma! LOL! So imagine my surprise when I popped up as elizabeth. My friend was just the opposite, she was positive she was elizabeth and then she was Emma… we had a good laugh about that. I love all the personality tests, they’re really fun! Oh and speaking of Jane Austen, I’m doing an antique book giveaway on my blog, all you have to do is type in your favorite austen book to enter. It’s to celebrate my one year anniversary since I began to write.

PS and I love your take on Elinor!

    Spy,
You’re not eloquent? I find that hard to believe!

    Jenni,
I entered your giveaway…but if I knew they gave away antique books in England, maybe I’d have moved there instead of Chicago.

Yeah, I’m a big hyphen fan too. Not too into the FB quizes though.

PS- Got the tote! My kids now think I’m enviro-cool! ;) Thanks.

    Mindy,
It’s not a FB quiz (I don’t click on any of those) it’s an internet quizzy thing. All fun and no fuss.

As for you being enviro-cool? Duh!

    :)

Don’t know the characters at all, but do find quizzes interesting most the time. Hope your puter got straightened out.

I’m Elinor, too! I had a feeling I would be even before I took the quiz, but it’s nice to have it confirmed. Great minds think alike :)

Angie, Angie, Angie! If you don’t want to read the books, see the movies (I love Emma, Pride & Prejudice is my 2nd fave)! They’re the original women’s fiction!

    L.C.,

Nice to *meet* another Elinor. What made you think you would be her. Or is that she? ;)

    Hi Amy,

What an interesting quiz. I didn’t take it although I read it. I already know who I would be without clicking the circles: A female Colonel Brandon. By the way, I think you are very much like Elinor so the quiz does have some merit. :)
