The secret to doing laundry…now with sound
The secret to doing laundry? Get your first-ever gig on the radio because you’re a writer.
I blog about once-a-month for Huffington Post Chicago, but yesterday the post I wrote landed on the national site, in the Living section. As if that wasn’t fabulous enough, I received an email from a radio producer at WABC AM in New York, asking me if I’d like to talk about Facebook with Curtis Sliwa on the radio. I did a little internet digging just to make sure this producer was for real, which took all of seven seconds, so I wouldn’t end up talking to a fake Curtis Sliwa — and I said yes. Then I contacted some media savvy colleagues and friends, asked for advice on Twitter, blasted my news on Facebook and I waited.
And while I waited, she wrote on my Facebook wall.
When 10:30 pm was coming around and I was waiting for the call from the producer, do you know what I did to stop the pacing and quell the nerves?
I folded towels.
Edited to add:
CLICK HERE for the podcast version of The Curtis Sliwa Show. My segment starts at minute 33, and if you move the “ball” slightly to the left of the center of the line (very technical terms, folks) you’ll be right there. My 13 year old said I sounded like I knew what I was talking about, and that I didn’t sound stupid. I consider that high praise.
If you think I sounded stupid, you can take it up with her.

Can’t wait to hear it. Curtis is great and was the only one offering hope to New York before Rudy Guiliani.
There is actually something therapeutic about folding laundry. I’m not sure what it is, but unless I have billions of socks to match, I don’t mind folding laundry at all.
Wowser, you! Congrats, and smart on you for digging to make sure the gig was legit. Woohoo. *clink* my coffee cup to yours.
Your famous!!!! Can I come with you when you go on Oprah and the View?
That’s so awesome! Congratulations!!!
Wow Amy! That is so so cool! I can see why you needed to fold laundry. I would be so antsy I’d have to do something with my hands while I waited. I’d love to hear the interview
Wow, that is fast! Quick!
I loved your article. I reconnected with my two best friends with grade school, and it felt a little odd. I mean, I felt weird, like they know me, the real me, the “root” me, and this older me feels different in a way. And I was comparing the two, and wondering how it seemed to them… and… I realized, I didn’t put that much thought into the changes they’d made. And they seemed exactly the same to me. Am I the same?
I don’t know. LOL! But meeting people from different stages of your life is a little disconcerting to me. I like it, though. It makes me stronger in who I am.
Yay! Congrats, Amy! That’s super exciting! Don’t forget us little people now that you’re big time
I can’t wait to hear the podcast. Congrats again!
Oh, how very, very cool. I’ll go look for your post.
I fold laundry when I’m antsy. Something about the routine is soothing.
That is so exciting!!! Congrats!!
I told you that you were well on your way. Congratulations American Girl.
Congratulations!! And I can relate – sometimes I will clean if I’m nervous about something. Or sometimes I just sit on the couch and watch sci-fi.
That’s AWESOME. Congratulations!
Thought you sounded great! Love that you monitor your kids’ internet activities but didn’t friend your son on Facebook – seems like just-right parenting, keeping them safe while not invading their space. I know certain parents who have friended their (non-adult) kids, and it inevitably causes friction, esp. when mom jumps in with comments, etc.
