What lights your way?
I’m usually as involved in the how’s as the what’s of writing. I don’t like writing books, per se, because I think we learn more about writing by reading good and not-so-good books than anything else. So then when I want to know more about the mechanics of writing I usually go online. I find a good blog or website or vlog. Because if I’m going to ingest someone else’s opinion I might as well be entertained. As usual Jackson Pierce was vlogging about what I was thinking about…and as usual she’s entertaining.
Outlining.
I outline, but I do it really loosely, with lots of white space for change. Because more than anything, things change and get rearranged within my outlines. I sometimes go full throttle in another direction and leave my outline wondering why I’d written it in the first place.
For me it’s not a road map — it’s more of a flashlight.
And speaking of flashlights (I’m too tired for a clever transition)…are you lighting up your monitor with GonnaWriMo this month? I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. You?

Between trying to get out more with the kids and then trying to stay awake after 9:00…the GonnaWriMo month is going you-know-where in a hand-basket. The ideas are swirling around in my head and I think they may leak out my ears if I don’t sit down to write soon. I’ve tried outlining…loosely…I find its good as a starter but then I rarely refer to it later. I guess it just gets my mind focused…kind of like binoculars to see to the end. I will, however, bow to the expertise of more experienced writers and put a little more effort into outlining for my next piece and see how it goes. Great tips and advice as usual!!
I used a fab book for my latest manuscript (80,000 word women’s fiction) and it helped keep me focused, make good transitions between chapters, and in general, guided me from start to finish. The book is Karen Weisner’s First Draft in 30 Days http://www.amazon.com/First-Draft-Days-Karen-Wiesner/dp/1582972966
My outlines take place in my head, I know the beginning and the ending before I sit to commit it to paper. The middle is another matter. That is my favourite part, because I’m never quite certain what my characters will do before we reach the finish line together. GonnaWriMo month in my home is now GonnaWriAsMuchAsIcanWithoutFeelingTooGuiltyAndExhausted. I have achieved full development of all characters. Now it’s the slogging up a very steep hill until its completed. By the way Amy, thanks for the lovely compliment! Right back atcha.
